Aug 24, 2026 ,SEOUL— LG Electronics (LG), has begun mass production of its next-generation 5G Release 16 (R16)-based smart telematics solution, integrating a communications module and up to 12 antennas into a single unit.
LG has already begun deliveries to a premium European automaker, marking the solution’s first deployment in a production vehicle in Europe.

Addressing the Growing Complexity of Vehicle Connectivity
As vehicle connectivity advances, automakers are required to accommodate an increasing number of antennas supporting technologies such as Multi-Frequency Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), 5G, Wi-Fi and Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X).
Conventional systems typically use separate telematics control units and externally mounted shark-fin antennas. However, the limited space available for external antennas, particularly for 5G systems requiring multiple antennas, often forces automakers to install additional antennas across the vehicle.
This increases RF cabling, wiring complexity, vehicle weight and overall costs. These challenges are particularly relevant to electric vehicles, where additional weight can affect driving range and complex wiring architectures can impact production efficiency.
Integrated Hardware and Software Architecture

LG’s new smart telematics solution integrates the communications module and multiple antennas into a single unit. Based on 5G R16 technology, its optimised internal architecture can accommodate up to 12 antennas, reducing reliance on external antennas and RF cabling while maintaining strong connectivity performance.
The solution features a modular architecture that can be adapted to different vehicle configurations and OEM requirements. Depending on the application, the telematics and antenna boards can be combined or separated, enabling the technology to be applied to both new and existing vehicle platforms.
Its scalable software platform is based on LG’s proprietary Automotive Telematics Platform (ATP), developed and refined over more than a decade. The platform enables the same core software to be reused across applications, with adjustments primarily required for chipset-specific interfaces.
This approach improves development efficiency, software stability and compatibility across global communications environments. The solution also supports multiple communications chipsets, helping automakers reduce reliance on a single component supplier and mitigate supply chain risks.
Reliable Performance in Demanding Conditions
The smart telematics solution is designed to operate reliably in demanding, high-temperature vehicle environments. Testing conducted using real vehicles has demonstrated stable data transmission and reception under extreme conditions, reinforcing its reliability for in-vehicle communications.
LG also draws on decades of experience in mobile communications, particularly in integrated hardware, mechanical and antenna design. These capabilities are critical to optimising internal structures, metal placement and thermal dissipation, all of which can influence communications performance and reliability.
Supporting the Software-Defined Vehicle Era
Beyond integrating multiple components into a single unit, LG’s smart telematics solution represents a shift from distributed antenna architectures toward a more integrated vehicle communications platform.
LG aims to establish the technology as core communications infrastructure for the software-defined vehicle (SDV) era, supporting applications including over-the-air (OTA) updates, V2X and autonomous-driving data transmission.
As vehicle connectivity continues to evolve, integrated telematics solutions are expected to play an increasingly important role in next-generation vehicle architectures.
“Our smart telematics solution goes beyond hardware integration to redefine the underlying architecture of vehicle communications,” said Eun Seok-hyun–President of the LG Vehicle Solution Company. “Leveraging its accumulated expertise in communications technologies and software, LG will continue to deliver integrated telematics solutions optimised for the SDV era.”
