The Luxury Sports Car Sedan – Mercedes-AMG E53

KUALA LUMPUR: The Mercedes-AMG E 53 is a souped up version of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class limousine.

A regular Mercedes-Benz E-Class could take less than seven seconds to hit 100kph, but an AMG E 53 only takes 4.5 seconds to throttle to 100kph. It is one of the closest cars to match super sports cars.

If Mercedes has removed the AMG and E 53 emblem from the car, the sedan looks like an elegant E-Class limousine with slight modification done to the exhaust, front grille and the wheels. It certainly doesn’t portray an aggressive, fierce, and sporty appearance, like how the Mercedes-AMG E 53 Sedan performs.Mercedes-Benz Malaysia launched the Mercedes-AMG E 53 in June last year, together with the Coupe version. Auto News Asia took the E 53 Sedan for a test and was blown away with its performance.

Powering the AMG E 53 Sedan is the 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbocharged engine with EQ Boost starter-alternator mated to a nine-speed AMG Speedshift automatic transmission. It produces 435 hp at 6,100 rpm and 520 Nm of torque between 1,800 and 5,800 rpm. The EQ Boost system can provide an additional 21.7 hp and 250 Nm of power when required.

According to Mercedes-Benz, the AMG E 53 Sedan has a top speed of 250 kph. The combined fuel consumption is rated from 8.6 to 8.7 litres per 100km (l/100km) and the combined co2 emission is measured from 197 to 200 gram per km.

The 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbocharged engine with EQ Boost starter-alternator paired to the nine-speed AMG Speedshift automatic transmission performs smoothly and remarkably powerful to provide a comfortable, fast, steady and fun ride. 

Switch the drive mode to Sport+, the exhaust will then roars loudly, and the E 53 Sedan performs to its full potential. Full throttle the E 53 Sedan and the G-force will push all occupants body into the seats. 

There’s is also an exhaust button, for those who desire the additional soundtrack from the exhaust during normal driving conditions.

The Mercedes-AMG E 53 Sedan sits tightly during high speed corners, it reacts as if the E 53 was glued to the ground, provided maximum grip during corners. Eventhough the sedan is running on 20-inch wheels, it smoothen most potholes filled, damaged and rough road conditions. Only the huge potholes and large sharp bumps were felt.

Measuring in at a length of 4.959 mm, a width of 2,065 mm, a height of 1,477 mm and a wheelbase of 2,939 mm. The AMG E 53 Sedan has a boot space of 540 litres and a fuel tank capacity of 66 litres.

As for the spaces in the AMG E 53 Sedan, generous legroom and shoulder room were provided by Mercedes. Nonetheless, we felt that any adult that is taller than 188 cm might find it lacking in headroom. The 540 litres boot space is able to fit in two large tandem strollers or up to four golf bags.

The Mercedes-AMG E 53 Sedan is equipped with AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system, AMG Ride Control+ air suspension, multibeam LED headlamps, 20-inch AMG alloy wheels, AMG Track Pace function, Comand online system, 13-speaker Burmester surround sound system, triple-zone automatic climate control, panoramic sunroof, keyless entry and push to start button, handsfree powered boot, nappa leather upholstery with carbon fibre trims, 64-colour ambient lighting, heated power-adjustable front seats with memory function, air balance fragrance, rear windscreen blind, dual 12.3-inch widescreen cockpit display, Qi wireless charging and rear side window blinds.

Its interior is futuristic, elegant, luxurious, comfortable and quiet. It has a modern layout dashboard, that is finished with leather, aluminium and carbon fibre trims. The dual 12.3-inch widescreen cockpit digitally displays the infotainment system and instrument cluster, that is clear and easy to see during the day or night.

There were close to none wind noise, tyre noise and engine noise that can be heard in the cabin. The exhaust soundtrack (if activated the exhaust sound) and the fine tunes produced by the 13-speaker Burmester surround sound system, can easily fill the cabin.

The Burmester surround sound system plays sharp and clear treble tunes, but the bass is still lacking the solid ohm from the subwoofer. Some upgrades would be needed for those audiophiles that seek live-concert-liked sound quality.

Its safety features include the Driving Assistance package that comes with the adaptive cruise control, active lane keeping assist, active blind spot assist, evasive steering assist, active parking assist, 360-degree camera, anti-lock braking system, electronic brake distribution, brake assist, electronic stability control, autonomous emergency braking, ISOFIX child seat anchor points and nine airbags.

The Mercedes-AMG E 53 Sedan is priced at RM740,888 excluding insurance. It is covered with Mercedes-Benz 4-year unlimited mileage warranty.

We managed to drive the Mercedes-AMG E 53 Sedan for over 650 km. Cruising on the highway within legal speed limits recorded 8.4 to 8.8 l/100km. After a maximum throttle driving, it resulted to about 14.1 to 17.3 l/100km. A mixture of city and highway driving registered about 10.3 to 12.5 l/100km. 

Overall, the Mercedes-AMG E 53 Sedan is a fun to drive and powerful car. However, there is still some room for improvement. It would be great if the AMG E 53 Sedan is equipped with the heads-up display that is available in the E 53 Coupe, so that the driver can fully concentrate on the road. It would be excellent if the front occupants could have more headroom.
